Social media is more important than ever for football clubs. Teams can connect with their fans all over the world, helping them develop as global brands. Especially in this day and age where kids prefer to play video games, social media is an important tool for clubs to keep their young fans interested. Today we will look at the football clubs with the largest percentual growth on Instagram in the month of February 2020.
5. Real Sociedad +9.9% (+20,792)
Real Sociedad had a fantastic month, winning 5 of their 6 matches in February. The team from San Sebastián jumped up in the table and now only has Barcelona and Real Madrid infront of them.
Real Sociedad also had a great cup spell this month. They can qualify for the Copa del Rey final as they head into the second leg of the semi-final against Mirandes March 4th with a 2-1 lead, after knocking out Real Madrid earlier this month. Especially the 4-3 cup game at the Bernabeu accounted for most of the growth on Instagram. Real Sociedad gained almost 10,000 followers from knocking Los Blancos out of the cup.
4. Sheffield United +9.9% (+19,199)
Shieffield is this year’s Premier League sensation. After being absent on the highest level for 12 seasons, The Blades have made a spectacular return as they are currently sitting in 7th, above the likes of Arsenal and Everton. Sheffield United is still in the race for a Champions League spot, as they are sitting just one point behind number five Manchester United. A spot that would be enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League if Manchester City gets excluded. With all this succes it comes as no suprise that Sheffield United are this month’s biggest percentual growers in the Premier League.
3. Atalanta +10.4 (+26,947)
Atalanta had a good month in the Serie A, beating Fiorentina and Roma. But most of their growth came after their Champions League game against Valencia. The team from Lombardy gained 20,000 new followers after they stunned Valencia with an attacking performance in their 4-1 defeat. With this win, the Champions League debutants are almost certain of reaching the quarterfinal.
2. Getafe +11.4% (+14,022)
Getafe did not have a particularly good month in La Liga. The team from the Spanish capital dropped down to the sixth place, after sitting in third for a while. Their growth was due to the succes they achieved in the Europa League in February. The Spanish team managed to suprisingly knock out last year’s Champions League semi-finalists Ajax in the round of 32.
1. RB Leipzig + 13.3% (+51,263)
RB Leipzig is this month’s biggest grower, with a growth of 13.3%. Die Roten Bullen are giving Bayern Munich some serious competition in the Bundesliga this season, sitting only one point behind der Rekordmeister in the league. Leipzig showed that they are a serious contender for the German title again last week, trashing Schalke 5-0 in their own stadium. Just like Getafe & Atalanta the real growth on Instagram was made after their Champions League game, however. RB Leipzig managed to get a win away against Tottenham in their first leg of the round of 16, after Werner scored from the penalty spot.
With an average growth of 4.3%, the teams from La Liga experienced the biggest average growth in February. Getafe, Sociedad, Eibar, Leganes and Granada all finished in the top ten. Ligue 1 is the slowest growing league out of the top 5 leagues, with an average growth of 2.4%.
