Atletico Madrid took their first steps towards the quarter final of the Champions League after beating Liverpool this tuesday. An early goal is all Atletico needed to beat the Reds at the Wanda Metropolitano, after which the Liverpool attack failed to penetrate Simeone’s defensive side.
Atletico had a dream start in Madrid, opening the score after only four minutes. Saul Niguez tapped the ball into the goal after the ball landed exactly infront of his feet from Atletico captain Koke’s corner.
Liverpool struggled to get past the Atletico defense and at times Liverpool’s defense was vunerable during Atletico counters. Morata had a chance to double the lead in the second half, but he slipped as he tried to shoot in the box.
Saul Niguez early goal turned out to be the only goal of the game as the score stayed 1-0 for the rest of the game. In order to turn things around and progress to the next round, Liverpool will have to win by two goals at Anfield in the return on March 13th.
