Mertens becomes Napoli’s most scoring player in history against Barcelona

With a beauty of a goal from outside the box, Mertens matched Hamsik’s club record of 121 goals tuesday night. It was not enough to put Napoli past Barcelona however, as Barcelona will travel back to Catalonia with a 1-1 draw.

Dries Mertens opened the score in the first half. After a horrible first touch, Junior Firpo lost posession in a dangerous position. Zielinski took advantage of the situation and assisted Mertens with a pass just outside of the box. The Belgian Midfielder curled the ball beautifully into the top right corner, leaving Ter Stegen without a chance.

With this goal, Mertens is now Napoli’s joined topscorer of all time. Both him and Hamsik have scored a total of 121 goals for the club. Earlier this year, Mertens became the second highest scoring player in the history of the club by overtaking Napoli legend Diego Maradonna.

Griezmann sent Barcelona to the second leg in a decent position after he tapped in Semedo’s pass in the second half. The Portuguese defender was through on goal after an amazing pass by Busquets. He laid it off to the French striker, who put the ball past Ospina.
