Lionel Messi ended his 4-game scoreless streak with a masterclass against Eibar. The Argentinian phenomenon scored four of Barca’s 5 goals in their 5-0 win over Eibar
Messi opened he score after 14 minuntes. He dribbled past two defenders with a nice piece of skill, after which he shot the ball past Eibar goalkeeper Dmitrovic. In the 37th minute he dribbled past the Eibar defense again, before doubling the lead in Camp Nou.
Just three minutes later, Messi completed his first half hattrick. Eibar gave Messi a present when a failed pass was reflected by Rakitic, landing right infront of Messi who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The Argentinian superstar decided to lay it off to Antoine Griezmann, but the Frenchman lost posession due to a bad first touch. The ball landed right infrot of Messi again and this time he did try to score it himself, and brought Barca up 3-0. Before this game, Messi hadn’t scored in four consecutive La Liga matches, leading to people thinking the 32-year old striker is over his prime. With this first half hattrick, the Argentinian proved all his doubters wrong by showing he has still got it.
Messi scored again in the second half, bringing the Catalonians up 4-0. After a pass inside the box in the 87th minute, all Messi had to do was tap the ball in. Instead, he dribbled past the a defender AND the goalkeeper before scoring. The final score was decided by Arthur, who tapped the ball into the back of the nap from a rebound after debutant Braithwaite’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
This win brings Barcelona over Real Madrid in the La Liga table. Real Madrid has a game in hand however, as they travel to Valencia to play Levane tonight 8pm UK time/3pm NY time. Messi solidified his number one position in the top scorers list, as he is now 5 goals clear from Karim Benezema with a total of 18 La Liga goals this season.
