Werner shoots Leipzig past Tottenham

Redbull Leipzig did great business last Wednesday, as they got a win away from home in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Tottenham Hotspurs. Leipzig will head into the second leg at home with a 1-0 lead after Timo Werner scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Nagelmann’s side dominated throughout the first half, but failed to finish their chances. Spurs newly acquired attacker Steven Bergwijn had a chance to open the score in favor of the Spurs, but Leipzig goalkeeper Gulácsi denied him the opportunity to score. Thus the game was scoreless as the teams were heading into the second half.

After an hour of playing, Ben Davies tackled Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer in the penalty box and the referee awarded Redbull a penalty. Timo Werner took the spot to shoot the penalty and put Leipzig past Tottenham.

The return will be played March 10th in Leipzig. With this win, Leipzig will have the best papers to qualify for the quarter final of the Champions League.
